Liberal Democrat Election Spokesperson Lord Scriven has written a letter to Conservative Chairman Grant Schapps, challenging his party to come clean on their plans to slash £12bn in working-age benefits from the welfare budget.

Speaking ahead of a visit to Panasonic Manufacturing in Cardiff Central with Jenny Willott and leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats Kirsty Williams AM, Nick Clegg said:

"Liberal Democrats will continue to build a stronger economy and a fairer society for Wales. We'll build on our work in Government to deliver economic growth that benefits all of the UK.

"The Tories and Labour's over-reliance on the financial sector in London didn't deliver for Wales. With our relentless focus on manufacturing and apprenticeships, we are showing a new way doing things.

"Labour's poverty of ambition held us all back for too long; in contrast we've delivered over two million apprenticeships so everyone has an opportunity to make a success of their lives. Over the next parliament, we'll build on this apprenticeship revolution.

"Both Labour and the Tories are a threat to our strong economic recovery. The Tories want to cut, cut and cut - not because they have to but because they want to. Labour's addiction to borrowing and debt will risk our recovery. Put simply: the Liberal Democrats will borrow less than Labour and cut less than the Conservatives - guaranteeing an economy that delivers for everyone across the UK."

At a press conference today, Leader of the Liberal Democrats Nick Clegg issued a stark challenge to David Cameron and Ed Miliband, asking them to answer one simple question: "Will you, or will you not, give the NHS the £8bn a year by 2020 that it needs and tell us how you plan to fund it?"

Only the Liberal Democrats will give the NHS the funds that doctors have asked for. Our manifesto plans include £8bn a year by 2020 for the NHS, with £3.5bn dedicated to improving mental health services.

The Conservative job creation plans have been branded as "totally meaningless", given their aim to let company bosses fire workers at will.

We already know what a Conservative jobs plan looks like. In government the Lib Dems blocked them allowing businesses to fire workers at will. They now plan savage cuts for the working age poor only to the benefit of very wealthy pensioners.

The Liberal Democrats would spend £3.5bn more on mental health care in England over the next parliament.

The money would be spent on revolutionising children's and adult mental health care including:

    • £250m over five years for pregnant women and mums dealing with depression. This would include eight new mother and baby units providing inpatient care for pregnant women and new mums and 40 new community services helping new mums adjust to life at home with a new born.
    • New waiting time standards for people in crisis and for conditions like bipolar disorder so that those who are ill know how long they have to wait.
    • Hundreds of thousands more people will get access to talking therapies for anxiety and depression.

Amid all the media noise around the start of the General Election campaign, let's not forget the extraordinary nature of this Government.

The Coalition was formed at a a time of national emergency to rescue an economy on the brink of disaster. Most said it wouldn't last five months, let alone five years.

Liberal Democrat Health Minister Norman Lamb has commented on Labour's pledge to cap private profits in the NHS, saying that a simplistic policy could cause "chaos" for local hospitals.

Labour today announced it would limit the profits of private firms in the NHS by a negotiable amount, but only Liberal Democrats have a credible plan to safeguard the NHS for the future.
